After Tanya left, Alex sat staring into the straw-coloured liquid of her drink. She held the crystal glass up to catch the light and found herself reflecting on the conversation about her father. Why had he believed for all those years that she’d had something to do with Jamie’s death? Surely it hadn’t just been the fact she didn’t tell him about the rape. Admittedly, she was a terrible liar, but that had been different—she wasn’t lying about anything, she’d been genuinely trying to block the episode from her mind. Had her behaviour really been so obvious and suspicious enough to make him believe she’d somehow been involved with that much certainty? Surely not.

Tipping her head back, she drained the contents of her glass and set it on the coffee table, then got to her feet purposefully. If there was an explanation, then she knew it was going to be in one of two places: the notebook or the manuscript. She’d been afraid to read through them before, but now she had no choice—she was not going to spend the rest of her life wondering. She couldn’t.

In the study, Alex picked up the police notebook and began turning the pages.

Location: rock pools at Little Beach. No visible footprints remaining due to tide. No signs of any disturbance due to tidal activity.
